Logging on and setting up my profile was easy. The site has a simple layout and no pop-up ads. After setting up my profile and instantly learning it was active (as with all sites run by this company), I began to look around. A search for a man in his 30s within 25 miles of my home in a major metropolitan area yielded over 450 results. Searches of all other age and gender groups in my area also provided lists of hundreds of available profiles. Before I was even done searching, I learned that 3 members had viewed my profile, another sent me his profile and another sent me a "smile." I checked out the two message boards: The popular "Relationships and Dating" spot and the less-popular "New and Current Events" board. As a free member, I was not allowed in the chat room, where less than 25 members were hanging out.

Men and women of all races are allowed to join, but an exhaustive search of profiles on reveals membership to be primarily Black and almost exclusively Heterosexual. Like the other sites operated by Utah-based Mingle Match ( and ), is profanity-free and very friendly, albeit a tad conservative - the site's FAQs actually direct those searching for same-sex matching to do a Google search. Ouch!
's membership: diverse, heterosexual, Black
Signing up for is fast and easy. Just fill out your profile (including your age, location, religion, education, number of children and potential partner preferences, along with fun facts about yourself and a few optional essay questions), and within seconds a friendly email arrives letting you know you are now a member. Instantly, you are welcome to peruse the rolls of available black heterosexual men and women on for a friend, date or even marriage partner. As in real life, singles in their 20s, especially the men, seem more interested in friendship and dating, while members in their 30s and 40s, especially women, are more intent on finding a soul mate. Whatever you are looking for, there are probably plenty of profiles on that fit your profile. Within minutes of my signing up, I was contacted by several friendly, available (at least they claim to be!) men in my desired area and age group.

With an unlimited free membership, you can respond to those messages from admirers or contact someone completely different who catches your eye with a smile (icebreaker) or e-card. Free membership also includes two-way Ideal Matching, detailed profile searches and the ability to participate in (but not initiate) instant messaging. Paid members can also initiate instant messaging, send and receive Mingle Mail (the on-site email service), chat and post messages on the site's two message boards. Anyone can take the fun Color Code Personality Quiz, although a more detailed profile costs money.
Black dating community well served at
As with other Mingle Match sites, specific demographic information such as how many active members the site has, where they live and breakdowns by age and gender are not readily-available on . does feature a fairly comprehensive list of FAQs (including the aforementioned same-sex dating response, which appears to be the same on all Mingle Match sites) and appears to have a very active and interested membership. If you are Black or interested in narrowing your dating pool to men or women of African descent, seems to be a very promising site. And since limited membership is free for as long as you want, what have you got to lose?
